Russell Ruckman - Classic U.S House
September 03, 2011 11:29 AM PDT
Last Saturday night I had the great pleasure of playing for one of my all time favourite DJ’s “Paul Trouble Anderson” at his long running legendary night “The Loft” It was early 1994 when a friend first introduced me to U.S house and garage, I already listened to house but I had never heard anything like this before, I remember instantly loving this new uplifting sound and it soon became my music. Always keen to discover new dance music I connected the Nynex cable system to the hifi so I could listen to London's Kiss FM, this was the only way of receiving it in Brighton back then, and this was when I discovered Paul. I first came across his show one Saturday night, I suddenly had a mad panic to find a fresh tape and record this amazing music coming out of the radio, I was instantly hooked and I soon became a big fan. Paul was a massive inspiration to me back then and without a doubt my favourite DJ and has played a big part in my musical upbringing. Playing at The Loft last week has inspired me to finally put together a mix of some of those classic U.S house sound’s I used to listen to on the radio every weekend. It’s a mixture of cd’s and vinyl and some of the records are quite old and have had plenty of play so please excuse the parts that are a bit faded or distorted. Track list bellow: 1) Uncanny Alliance - I Got My Education - (Kenlou Mix)

What with pride in Brighton being such a massive event for everyone in the city Soul Damn Funky decided to get involved and put out a mix to celebrate the biggest party weekend of the year. The mix starts of with some brand new soulful house hot of the press, then stepping it up to some bumpy jackin beats, funky disco house and driving house sounds plus a few classics thrown in for good measure. Whether you getting ready to go out or just got home from a night of clubbing whatever the occasion this mix will be the perfect sound track to your pride weekend. A bit of a change from the usual uplifting howling halleluiah house music I’m so well known for, this time I’m taking it a lot deeper and dare I say it slightly moody! All the music on this mix is still very much me and if you caught me playing out late enough one night these are the kinda sounds you might hear. Starting off with an amazing new track from Phil Asher feat Shea Soul and that’s about as soulful as this mix gets, I chose this track as to me its not really a soulful house record, its more deep and very melodic which is how I wanted this mix to sound, the first half of the mix stays on a deep melodic level then stepping up to some bouncy jackin house but still keeping that deep house vibe all the way through. Just a short one this time 50 minutes, hope you enjoy, track list & label info are attached. ========================================================================== TRACKLIST: (1) 01m 31s - Phil Asher Ft: Shea Soul - Can’t Go Back - Restless Soul Music

This has to be one of my absolute favourite mixes and to think I left it just sitting there on the hard drive for two years (hence the name) before rediscovering it and listening to it for the first time. It’s a collection of some of the best underground deep and soulful house music from around that time and this mix is truly one for the real house connoisseurs. It wasn’t track listed, so I’ve just got round to doing that now so I can share the information as well as the music with you all, hope you enjoy. 1) 00:00 The Rurals - Rain

Here’s a mix I recorded back in November 2007 which I’ve just rediscovered, I forgot what a great mix this is so decided it needs to be put back out there, its one of the most uplifting, funky, soulful selections of pure U.S house music. When this mix was first recorded it was only available on CD’s which were given out at bars and clubs on the south coast, it was then added to my podcast site soon after and it was massively popular. Since then lots of my other mixes have come along and this one has taken a back seat, the original podcast had no information or track list, so I’ve just been through the mix and track listed it to put it out there again for a new audience who missed it the first time. 1) 00:00 Barbara Tucker - Stay Together

About Russell RuckmanRussell’s first DJ experiences started at the very young age of 10 playing classic house, soul and hip hop at youth club disco’s, getting up in front of a crowd at such a young age fuelled Russell’s confidence for what he was dreaming about pursuing as a career. Growing up as a teenager in the early nineties Russell was heavily influenced by the likes of Masters At Work, Bobby & Steve, Tony Humphries, Masters At Work, Gilles Peterson, Joey Negro and when it came to proper U.S house & garage his biggest inspiration was Paul Trouble Anderson who’s Kiss FM show he tuned into religiously from early 95. From the age of 14 Russell was already starting to get his foot in the door of the dance scene by working on local radio stations Freedom FM & Dfm 101.4. Russell took sometime out for a few years to do other things but then in 2005 he bounced back and decided to take his DJ’ing seriously again and started to pick up from where he left off and was soon securing gigs again in Brighton & London. In 2008 he was made a resident DJ for one of the south coasts biggest soulful house events “God Made Me Funky” he also landed himself with a weekly Saturday morning Radio show on Bournemouth’s Deep Blue FM. After being snapped up by God Made Me Funky in 2008, the following year Russell picked up another residency, this time in Brighton at the Funky Buddha Lounge playing for non other than soulful house pioneers Bobby & Steve for their successful monthly event Bobby & Steve Presents. Since Russell’s return to the world of house music in 2005 he has played for some of the best club events and venues including: Audio, Digital, Funky Buddha Lounge and The Coalition in Brighton. Bar 54, Stanza, Medicine, The C.A.M.P and Bar Vinyl in London. Not forgetting gigs in other parts of the UK including: The Midlands, Bristol, Dorset and Devon.
